Allegiance to Love

In Christian Science, Principle and Love are synonyms for God, and a study of the Concordances reveals how often throughout her writings Mrs. Eddy has linked these words. The ancient Scriptures refer to the love of God, but not until the coming of Jesus was it plainly shown that God is Love. Similarly, although both the Old and the New Testament contain many statements of the undeviating justice of God, and many stern injunctions to obedience and fidelity, Mrs. Eddy was the first to give to Deity the name of Principle.

The second commandment, after prohibiting the making of "any graven image," continues, "Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the Lord thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me; and shewing mercy unto thousands of them that love me, and keep my commandments."

Many devout Christians have been troubled by the thought of God which these and corresponding verses have seemed to them to convey; considered in the light of Christian Science, however, may they not be regarded as pointing to the fact that God is Principle? The story of Moses is the story of a man who walked in the light of a progressively unfolding understanding of God. In meekness, in humility, in unwavering certainty of divine guidance, he accomplished his great task. Even at the beginning of the wilderness years, he must have possessed an understanding of the divine nature far beyond that of the heterogeneous multitude whom he led out of Egypt. Alone with God upon Mount Sinai he received the Ten Commandments.
