The Narrow Way

[Written Especially for Young People]

There stands in the tropics a very old cypress tree. It is so old and so tall that it has become famous, and many people go to see it. It grows in a swamp, and a narrow path has been built from the road to the tree. Every effort is made to stay on the safe, narrow path. This clearly brought home to a student of Christian Science a valuable and timely lesson.

So it is in Christian Science, she thought; the narrow way to the tree of righteousness, or right thinking, is the only safe and happy way. Those who understand and know this way do not desire to deviate from it, remembering the words of our beloved Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, in her Message to The Mother Church for 1901 (p. 2), "What Jesus' disciples of old experienced, his followers of to-day will prove, namely, that a departure from the direct line in Christ costs a return under difficulties."

Christ Jesus said, "I am the way," and he is the Christian's great example and Way-shower. Mrs. Eddy, in her writings, has given us the "key" to this Christ-way of living, for in Christian Science we joyfully learn that God, good, is All, that He is our ever-present Father-Mother, tenderly and harmoniously governing His children, and that we can never be separated from Him for an instant. It follows, then, that only the good is true. So error, whatever guise or disguise it may assume, is not from God, and never has any real existence.
