Harmony in Christ

Jesus of Nazareth in his ministry showed men the way of harmony through awaking them to the presence of the Christ, God's spiritual idea. He acted in obedience to the Father's will, in fulfillment of divine prophecy, and his healing work was the proof of his Messiahship. In the Acts of the Apostles it is stated that he "went about doing good, and healing all that were oppressed of the devil; for God was with him." He went about demonstrating God's love, proving man's right to enter the kingdom of heaven freely. God has been, and is, eternally with men, for God is infinite Life and our only Father. This fact, realized in our human affairs, lifts us into harmony.

Mary Baker Eddy has written in the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 288), "The Christ-element in the Messiah made him the Way-shower, Truth and Life." True consciousness is divine, not human; it is the kingdom of heaven, harmony, within us. God, Life, expresses Himself in harmonious action; and as we bear witness individually to "the Christ-element," life in Christ appears, and evil begins to disappear. This is a measure of progress towards immortality.

Harmony is the established spiritual fact. God's man is perfectly harmonious; he is loving, joyous, and free. Inharmony of mind or body results from ignorance of or willful disobedience to the harmonious law of Life, which is unceasingly operative on man's behalf and is reflected in health and holiness. The law of God needs to be understood in order that it may be reverently and rightly obeyed, and this understanding comes through the study of Christian Science. In Science men learn to live in the sanctuary of Spirit, and find safe dwelling away from the provocations of mortal selfhood. In this sanctuary the receptive heart realizes the presence of the Christ, the immortal idea of Truth, and can rest in the assurance of the reality of harmony, and of the unreality of the claims of discord.
