How Healing Comes

Healing through Christian Science is an appearing to human sense of the power of God, infinite Mind. The appearing comes with an effect of harmony, transcending all ordinary human concepts of harmony, but it is a thoroughly realistic experience. It is indeed an experience, in a measure, of pure Science, of absolute reality; and the student is enabled soon, if not immediately, to see just how it occurred.

These are circumstances which Christian Scientists gladly bring to the attention of others on all proper occasions. For they see that this Science portends good, and good only, for all men; and they have observed the joy with which one, even one who may long have known of Christian Science without truly grasping its meaning, begins to perceive what it is and what it does. They have seen how such a one may be inclined to say, like a child who at length grasped the beauty of a bit of music that he had been practicing, "Why didn't I know about this before?" Only, of course, the beauty that such a one discerns begins at once to color his whole life, in accordance with the prophecy of Isaiah: "The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me. . . . To appoint unto them that mourn in Zion, to give unto them beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness."

Christian Science healing is always an effect of discernment of Truth. The student is aroused through spiritual intuition or understanding from the hypnotic and unreal belief that man is material, and therefore subject to discord. The apparently physical condition that seems to need healing is found to be not physical at all, and not real, but only an aspect of this belief. As the patient awakes, or awakes more fully, to the fact that man is not material, but is the likeness of God, infinite Spirit, as the Scriptures declare, he experiences a great sense of relief and release. He sees that he is not, and has not been, subject to the trouble. The dream correspondingly vanishes, and with it the afflictive conditions, which were only a part of the dream.
