From early youth I was driven by a constant desire to understand God and man's relationship to Him, in a world where good and evil seemed to have equal reality. I could never accept the orthodox belief that God knows or permits evil. I read many so-called metaphysical works, but nothing satisfied my thought until I began to study "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, in conjunction with the Bible.
At this time I had been suffering for three years from periodical lung hemorrhages. A physician advised me to enter a sanatorium, but a previous visit there had not healed me, so I decided that this period of enforced rest should be used at home in a closer study of Christian Science. I did not think of applying it to the healing of the physical condition, but, as I studied, the truth so filled my consciousness that it completely eliminated the ailment. The change in my appearance was so evident that it was commented upon by my friends.
For the encouragement of others, I should like to say that this healing came, without specific treatment, through my earnest study of Science and Health, and the desire to gain an understanding of God. It took place eighteen years ago and has been permanent. Later, and with the help of a practitioner, who patiently showed me how to overcome resentment and a sense of injustice, I was healed of a throat condition which had resulted in the loss of my voice.
