From childhood I was troubled with swelling feet and ankles, and was not so strong and well as the average girl. Shortly after my marriage an operation was deemed necessary, after which I grew worse instead of better. No food could be retained, and all nourishment was given by hypodermic. It was called an advanced case of sugar diabetes. I spent nine months in the hospital, and during that time fourteen different physicians were either on the case or called in consultation, all giving the same verdict, "No possible hope of a healing."
At last it was decided that a continuous change of climate might prolong my life for a short while. I was taken from one climate to another, but received no benefit, and finally went to the home of a relative to die, since the disease had reached its last stages.
In this home I found "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, and began to read it. I read almost constantly day and night, beginning to see some of its truths, but not seeking healing. I seemed to have no sense of time, place, or surroundings—just a desire to know God better.
