For the loving protection and tender guidance of our...
For the loving protection and tender guidance of our Father-Mother God which have been manifested in my life through the understanding of Christian Science, I am most grateful.
My mother had occasionally read the Christian Science periodicals, and had been benefited by Christian Science treatment. But when I was a young child, there was great opposition to Science in our home, and my mother was handicapped by a severe illness. Believing that she had not long to live, she was desirous of passing on to me the little understanding of the truth that she had gained in Christian Science. Her efforts were directed to teaching me the simple verities. I learned positively and permanently that God is Love.
One Saturday morning I suddenly slipped and fell, and my right hand went down on the blade of a scythe, which had been placed, blade upwards, against the side of our house. My thumb was almost completely severed. I was picked up and taken into the kitchen, where my mother stood, almost petrified with fear. I looked at her, smiled, and suddenly said: "Don't be afraid, Mother. God is Love. He didn't cause this to happen. This never happened, and I'm all right." Visibly calmed, she began to wrap a towel around my hand in an effort to stop the flow of blood. We had no knowledge of a practitioner and, realizing that stitches would have to be taken, she called a physician. We sat in the room talking of God, and claiming the unreality of anything but the presence of divine Love. When the physician arrived, he began work on my hand. He said that the thumb could never be used again, and that it would be necessary for me to wear splints for at least six weeks. When these statements were made, the thought came: "That cannot be true. God is Love and He is an ever-present help." In three days the hand was completely healed, and I have used it normally ever since. At the time I was only seven years of age. This healing was instrumental in eliminating much of the antagonism in the family. It proved to me and to my family that the acknowledgment of God as all-power does bring harmonious results, and it turned my thought definitely to Christian Science.
