When I came to Christian Science I was burdened with...
When I came to Christian Science I was burdened with grief, and had slept very little for three months. I was subject to appendicitis, severe toothache, and neuralgia; had weak eyes, and a weak heart. These have all been healed through my study of Christian Science.
I had been searching for help in various directions without success. In despair I turned to God, and prayed earnestly to be shown what it was right for me to do. In answer to my prayers I was led to visit my eldest sister in another state. She had been studying Christian Science, and told me it would help me.
After my first talk with a practitioner, I slept well all night. I had several further talks, and the practitioner very kindly told me how to apply the truth. She advised me to buy "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, and to subscribe for and read the Christian Science periodicals. I found the book very absorbing, yet I read it in "fear and trembling," thinking I would only accept what I found good. When I had read it all, I was convinced that it was all good. God has healed my grief and filled my heart with peace, joy, and hope.
About a year after I began to study, I had a very wonderful experience during childbirth. I had treatment from a Christian Science practitioner, and the birth was almost painless. Immediately afterward I felt rested, and realized the truth of Mrs. Eddy's statement (Science and Health, p. 218), "The consciousness of Truth us more than hours of repose in unconsciousness."
We have experienced protection in accidents. Once I had been working for my son, who was away, and I learned later that he had been in an accident in which the car was wrecked, but the occupants were unhurt.
At one time my sixteen-month-old baby, after pouring a cup of boiling coffee over himself, was healed instantly. When I heard his screams, I thought, "Nothing can hurt God's child." Then I turned and saw what had occurred, but felt no fear. I picked him up, and declared the truth. He stopped crying, and there was not even any redness left to show that he had been burned. One morning our little girl was very hoarse. I talked of Truth to her, and in a short time all hoarsensess was gone.
In 1929 we had four hailstorms, and my husband feared we would not have enough grain for feed. I worked for protection of our supply, and realized that God is the source of all good. The result was that we had four hundred bushels of barley from a small stack. The men were amazed, and said there was more barley than straw.
In 1930 I was healed of what I thought was cancer of the throat. I reasoned that God being the only creator, and His creation being good, as the Bible declares, that He never made disease; hence, it was a lie of mortal mind. In three or four months the trouble disappeared, never to return.
In conclusion, I will say I am grateful for Mrs. Eddy's discovery of the truth which sets us free. I am glad to be a member of The Mother Church and of a branch church, and I am grateful for our periodicals, for the practitioners, and for the lectures.
(Mrs.) Eva Urban, Epping, North Dakota.
