I took up the study of Christian Science some thirty...
I took up the study of Christian Science some thirty years ago. My first healing was that of chronic dyspepsia and stomach trouble, and came about through my study of the Bible and the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy.
Several years later a member of the family, who was not interested in Christian Science, was subjected to attacks of physical suffering. The doctors pronounced this to be gallstone trouble, and said that nothing but an operation would relieve the condition. My relative gave his consent to have the operation, and on the evening before he was to be taken to the hospital I became very disturbed and fearful. I went to the Bible and Science and Health for help, and spent some time in prayer and study. These words came to me from the eighth chapter of Romans, "For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God." In pondering this message, the word "us" stood out before me, and it came to me that "us" included all—included my relative. I was completely freed from fear, and the sufferer was healed. In a few minutes he asked for something to eat, which was given him, and he rested all night. The doctor came in the morning, and as he was leaving he said to me, "Well, our patient is all right, and I believe you had something to do with it." This condition never returned. Mrs. Eddy says (Rudimental Divine Science, p. 9), "The spiritual power of a scientific, right thought, without a direct effort, an audible or even a mental argument, has oftentimes healed inveterate diseases."
