This Is Peace

Lone, lofty peaks, remote and far;
The solitude of sea-washed sands;
The calm retreat of trees and streams;
The call of far-flung foreign lands—

These cannot give the tired heart
Its needed comfort and release
From sorrow, pain, or deep distress;
Earth's joys alone cannot bring peace.

The peace desired by mankind is
Not of the earth, but from above;
It is to know and understand
That God is Life, and Truth, and Love.

It is to turn from worldly woes,
From fear that haunts, and sin that harms,
And rest in the infinitude
Of God's encircling, tender arms.

To dwell within His secret place,
Where joy abides and discords cease;
To see the beauty of His grace,
And feel His presence—this is peace.
