The Lighthouse and the Light

[Written Especially for Young People]

On a rocky point under the shadow of an ancient fort stands a lighthouse which flashes its steady beams of guidance and warning to navigators. On dark nights, when fierce storms rage, the light still shines from within the tower. Even on bright, clear nights its gleams are noticeable, and they give out a message of cheerfulness and watchful care.

May we not all learn a lesson in true living and loving from the beacon and its steady beam? We know that in Christian Science it is our task to keep the light of love, purity, honor, courage, and faith burning brightly within our consciousness. When conditions around us seem difficult, we endeavor to reflect spiritual light. We remember that God is with us, and that we are under the ever-present protection of divine Love, even when we seem to be alone in our stand for the right, when, for example, we lovingly yet firmly refuse to partake of intoxicants, tobacco, drugs, or to indulge in profanity; for in doing right we stand upon the rock, Truth, as did our Exemplar, the best man who ever lived, Christ Jesus, the Way-shower.

The lighthouse steadily resists the storm, the winds, and the waves, and continually gives out light. So it should be with us. Should envy, anger, or misunderstanding be hurled at one who is endeavoring to keep a straight course, these errors should be met, not with resentment or fear, but with spiritual love. One should extinguish them by steadfastly reflecting the light of Truth and Love. Then, whatever storm may roar around us, we can prove error's nothingness. Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, writes on page 410 of "Science and Health with Key tothe Scriptures": "Every trial of our faith in God makes us stronger. The more difficult seems the material condition to be overcome by Spirit, the stronger should be our faith and the purer our love."
