Christian Science is a religion which leads us to God by spiritualizing thought, and which demonstrates its efficacy by healing the sick. I am deeply grateful that I had the privilege of being raised in a family which took up the study of Christian Science when I was a small child, for I have had many proofs of the power of God.
However, when I left home to be in a distant city for some time, I found myself faced with the problem of thinking for myself, making my own decisions, and learning to depend upon God entirely and without the comforting help of my mother. One healing which I experienced proved to me, more than many others, the direct healing power and presence of God. I was living in a hotel at the time, with a friend who was not interested in Christian Science. A severe case of tonsillitis appeared, and I called a practitioner for help. The help, which was lovingly given, was apparently received. But the healing was not complete in my thought, for the condition reappeared the following week end, and in a more aggravated form. Again I asked for help, and the help was given the second time, with relief and healing resulting. For the third time this condition reappeared, and in a still more alarming form. This time mortal mind succeeded in convincing me, temporarily, at least, that Christian Science could not heal. I could not seem to recall former healings to help me have confidence. The practitioner was helping me, but it seemed that there was something in my thought that had to be healed before I could realize my permanent healing. The suggestion even came to me that maybe I should use some material remedy. But when this suggestion came through a friend, my challenging spirit came to the front. Before I went to sleep that night, while the physical manifestation was very much in evidence, I picked up Science and Health and opened it at random to page 492, where Mrs. Eddy says: "Discussing his campaign, General Grant said: 'I propose to fight it out on this line, if it takes all summer.' Science says: All is Mind and Mind's idea. You must fight it out on this line. Matter can afford you no aid."
This statement brought to my thought, with power, the truth which heals, for instantaneously the swelling dissolved and I was free, completely healed. I was convinced that there had never been any reality to this condition, but that God had been giving me an opportunity to overcome a weak faith and replace it with spiritual strength. I also learned that the power of Truth is ours in every situation, and that it was only the hardness of my heart which hindered my realizing God's active presence.
