When Christian Science found me I was ready for it

When Christian Science found me I was ready for it. I had never been very strong physically, and at the time it was presented to me I was trying in vain to rise above what seemed to be a terrible sorrow, as well as struggling with all the symptoms of influenza. A neighbor, who was a Christian Scientist, came in to borrow something from my mother. She accepted our invitation to stay for a few minutes and sat down in the room where I was resting. Naturally I had nothing to talk about but my troubles. She listened patiently, occasionally making some brief remark, and finally rose in rebellion against the error and took full possession of the conversation. For several minutes she talked the truth to me with all the force of positive conviction back of it and ended up with this statement, which is the only one I remember: "And you are not sick."

After she had gone I told my mother I did not know what our neighbor had done, but that I felt different and meant to help myself all I could by getting about and doing something. One thought which came clearly to me at this time was that if God is able to do all things for us, He can certainly heal us when we are sick. I finished preparations I was making for a trip and went the next day to the country to spend the spring vacation, as I was teaching school at the time. I am grateful to say that I did not have influenza, the thought of sorrow cleared away, and just one desire filled my moments as the vacation time went by. I could hardly wait until I could return to my home and get across the street to our Christian Science neighbor to find out more about this Science. The spiritual illumination which had come to me was glorious. I seemed to be living in a new world of freedom, joy, and dominion.

I accepted the teachings without reservation, never thought of resorting to medicine again for healing, and on down through the years have had many proofs of the practical value of this new-old religion in solving many kinds of problems.
