It is now well over twenty years since Christian Science...
It is now well over twenty years since Christian Science first came into my home. My parents, who were earnest students of the Bible, had turned from the unsatisfying teachings of their orthodox church to the so-called "newer interpretations," hoping to find an explanation of the healing miracles, and a way to avail themselves of the beautiful prophecies of the Scriptures.
While still a small child, attending an orthodox Sunday school, I also had questioned the logic of many of the teachings about God and man. When I recall these early experiences and those which followed our introduction to Christian Science, I am always reminded of the words of the Apostle Paul in his sermon on Mars Hill, "Whom therefore ye ignorantly worship, him declare I unto you." It was not hard to believe that, as Christian Science teaches, God is Mind and Truth and Love, and that as such He could be everywhere present, and that man could be His image and likeness. Such a God could be worshiped understandingly.
Several months before, my mother had sustained an injury to one of her eyes which had necessitated an operation; but in spite of this the eye had become virtually useless. A second operation was recommended in order to save the other eye. At this time she began to study Christian Science, and after the first visit to a practitioner all fear disappeared. After a very short time her sight was normal and the healing complete. In quick succession came healings for other members of the family, of rheumatism, boils, rupture, and influenza. During all the years since then Christian Science has been our only physician, with many more healings to its credit.
My gratitude for these early healings increased as I learned more of Christian Science and was called upon to apply it to my own problems. When about sixteen years of age, I sustained an injury to the abdominal muscles while at play. I suffered greatly and finally had to give up my work. progress seemed slow, but through absolute faith in Christian Science and with the help of a practitioner, the healing was brought about. The thoroughness of this healing is evidenced by the fact that I was able to take a job shortly afterward, requiring heavy lifting and physical exertion, which I was able to do without any fear or discomfort. At another time I experienced an instantaneous healing of a badly sprained ankle. This healing came as a result of my earnestly contemplating a message brought out by one of the Christian Science lecturers, on the necessity for the expectancy of good. A few years ago it was my privilege to witness the complete healing of a case of intestinal tuberculosis in its last stages, which had been given up as hopeless by several physicians.
The study of Science has enabled me to overcome many undesirable habits and traits of character. It has given me an understanding of man's true activity, which has been of inestimable value in solving problems of unemployment. My wife and I have found in Christian Science the basis of true living and a joyous companionship which could not be gained from a teaching less spiritual.
It is easy to understand from the above why I am deeply grateful for Christian Science.
