Signs of the Times

Topic: Lincoln Day

[From the Escalon Times, California]

Have you ever stopped to ponder what has for these many years carried our country through so many troublous times? What has kept the dulk of the people striving to build instead of tear down? What has caused the endless striving for better things for the old, the ill, and the unfit? Why have more and more orphan homes been built? ... Why a continued and ever-increasing number of schools, colleges, and universities?

The reasons may be found in the churches of America. ... Our country was founded by God-fearing churchgoers. Our country has been kept on an even keel by the same class of citizenship. Our country will come through anything in store for it by the same citizenship. Not alone by the actual church, members, but by the influence of this group over the people of the nation at large who, while they fail to attend church, do not support the things which do tear down decency and morals.
