Extracts from Reports of Christian Science Committees on Publication

So far as is known, not a single derogatory statement concerning our religion has appeared in the press of our state during the past year. In a speech before a Ministerial Association one minister was reported to have said, "Whenever religion becomes science, it fails as a religion." Your Committee thought this a good opportunity to present to the readers of the newspaper in which this report appeared some facts as to the harmony of religion and Science as discovered, taught, and demonstrated by our Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, in Christian Science; and the editor of the paper willingly published the letter. A subsequent call on the minister in question revealed the fact that he did not have Christian Science in mind at all when he made his statement, but was alluding to physical or natural science. It was also found that this minister had a very high regard for Christian Scientists and their religion.

The press in our state continues, almost without exception, very friendly to Christian Science. Perhaps this is largely due to the respect which Christian Scientists have gradually won for their religion during the passing years. But no doubt it is partly due also to the influence of our great international daily newspaper. Over ninety editors in our state are now receiving The Christian Science Monitor on our subscription-in-exchange-for-advertising plan, and it is held in high regard by all of them. One editor wrote: "During the past year we carried your advertisement a great many more times than was necessary to pay the subscription, yet we were glad to do this because we personally get so much enjoyment out of the Monitor." Another wrote: "After reading the Monitor for some three years I rely upon it more than ever for its trustworthy news, its sane and fair editorial expressions, and its emphasis upon all that is most constructive in the news." And another: "Of all the publications and all the daily newspapers that reach me, The Christian Science Monitor is without question, in my opinion, the best daily newspaper published."

It is gratifying to note the fact that frequent quotations from The Christian Science Monitor appear in newspapers throughout the state, and that Monitor cartoons are often reproduced. Many notices concerning lectures are also printed. The report of the Annual Meeting of The Mother Church was more widely used than ever before. One or two papers published this report in full, others published it in part, while one daily printed an editorial strongly commending that part of the message of The Christian Science Board of Directors touching upon world affairs.
