Every day I am more grateful to God for the words and works of Christ Jesus as recorded in the Bible, for the pure truth which Mrs. Eddy expressed in her works, and for the establishment of the Christian Science movement.

From childhood until I was over thirty years old I did church work in an orthodox denomination. While I was engaged in intensive work with young people, I became atheistic. I had tried to teach them; then had attempted to amuse and interest them; until the work seemed to me to be more like a social than a religious activity. They needed something available and concrete, not a theory for the future, and I could not convince them that religion was practical.

Fifteen years before this I had called on a Christian Science practitioner to learn if I could be healed of bowel trouble of long standing, but had gone away without asking for work to be done, and had thought no more about Christian Science.
