Affection

[Original article in German]

As the result of Christian Science, a deep human affection can be uplifted and sanctified in a truly wonderful way. In Science we see man as the highest expression of God, perfect and spiritually complete. This understanding uplifts our present concept of those whom we love and trust. It leads to greater unfoldment, to higher ideals and loftier desires. It confirms the words of our Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 57), "Happiness is spiritual, born of Truth and Love."

When we love spiritually, the merely personal, egotistic desire to possess someone for ourselves alone falls away. It gives place to a more spiritual outlook, which shows us that all God's children live together in harmonious friendship. If we would attain mutual understanding, it is necessary to realize this scientific truth about man. The genuine Christian Scientist loves God and His image and likeness—the real man—rather than material personality.

The highest affection is never subject to restriction. The understanding which Christian Science gives of spiritual man is joy-inspiring. The recognition of man as the divine image and likeness brings continuous happiness and satisfaction. In this realization there is no disappointment, no blighted hope. It is our right and privilege to see man as God's image, even though mortal sense may conjure up the mirage of discord, and press upon us suggestions of division and hatred.
