Ever since I was old enough to read my Bible I longed to...
Ever since I was old enough to read my Bible I longed to know how Jesus healed the sick. Words cannot express the gratitude I feel to Mary Baker Eddy for discovering the Science of Christianity.
After the birth of my children I had many physical ailments. I was in constant pain, and had two nervous breakdowns. I consulted physicians and took medicine regularly, for a period of about ten years, and then turned to osteopathy. Two years later I developed colitis, and finally lost faith in material healing methods altogether.
In a miserable state of mind I lay on the sofa, day after day, wondering why God treated me this way; why I could not be strong enough to enjoy my family and do the necessary work in my home; why I should be punished so terribly when all my life I had tried to follow the Golden Rule. Then I began to think about Christian Science. I went to the public library and asked for books on this subject. Of those which I took home, one book was derogatory. After reading it I had little desire to read the textbook, Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy. About a year later a friend said: "Why don't you try Christian Science? It might at least help your mental state." I again procured Science and Health, and started to read. I had read only the first page of the chapter on Prayer when I felt a great sense of joy. I had glimpsed the "absolute faith that all things are possible to God" (Science and Health, p. 1). Here was a woman who spoke from experience. This must be true! I told my husband that I knew beyond all doubt I could get well. He looked at me incredulously. The next morning I telephoned the doctor that I should not be back. Six days later the colitic condition was completely healed. Within approximately two months after I began the sincere study of the Bible and the Christian Science textbook, I suddenly realized one day that I had become well and strong. I did not know exactly when the complete healing of all the ailments took place; I only knew that I was enjoying life again. I love my Bible as I had never loved it before. I was beginning to understand God and the man He created. Such a change had taken place that friends whom I had not seen for some time did not recognize me.
