Several years ago I first heard of Christian Science...
Several years ago I first heard of Christian Science through a friend, who lent me a copy of Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy. The only statement that made any impression on me at that time was (p. 22), "'Work out your own salvation,' is the demand of Life and Love, for to this end God worketh with you." I had thought our destiny was more or less planned for us, and my own, so far, had not been a very happy one. That statement opened up a new line of thought, and gave me courage to go on. My next step was to attend a Christian Science lecture; then I began attending church services. Without any conscious effort on my part I was healed of severe headaches and fainting spells, and I enjoyed a peace I had never known before.
About six months later I was suddenly stricken with an illness which rendered me absolutely helpless. I suffered much pain, and was unconscious most of the time. I had no fear, only the desire to prove that Christian Science was actually the truth and would bring me safely through this trial. I was not allowed to have Christian Science help, and to quiet the fear expressed, consented to see a physician. After examining me, the doctor said that unless I could take nourishment I should last only a few hours. Later in the day a practitioner was permitted to come to see me, and upon hearing the doctor's statement told me that God is my Life, and that man is sustained by God.
That night I suffered from convulsions, and felt myself slipping away, but I kept holding to the thought of Life, until the morning came. I said nothing about this experience to anyone but the practitioner, who told me that Truth was sustaining me, as indeed it was. Ten days had gone by without one drop of liquid or food passing my lips. That evening my thought turned to our Wednesday evening meeting, and while gratefully thinking of some of the beautiful statements and testimonies I had heard I arose and walked into another room, singing one of our hymns. Not until a member of the family came running up the stairs did I realize what had occurred. While thought had turned away from the body, I had been instantaneously healed.
