In a recent issue of your paper a writer discussing "Mental Healers" gave a partial history of Franz Anton Mesmer. In his discussion he made a reference to Mary Baker Eddy, which gave a mistaken impression regarding her and her teaching.

Please permit me to say that Christian Science is in no way similar to mesmerism or psychoanalysis. Mesmerism or hypnotism is the asserted influence of one human mind over another. In Christian Science, healing is accomplished by the spiritually mental method taught and practiced by Christ Jesus. Christian Science accepts God as the one and only Mind, and admits of no other mind or influence. It bids us follow the admonition of Paul to the Philippians, "Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus." According to the Manual of The Mother Church by Mrs. Eddy (p. 17), the Christian Science church is "designed to commemorate the word and works of our Master, which should reinstate primitive Christianity and its lost element of healing."
