Greater Works

It was our Lord's last supper
With his disciples; and he talked with them
Of things that were to be, which they should know
Thereafter: of his departure from the world
Straightway, and of his purpose to prepare
A place for them—a holy consciousness
Where they should be with him for evermore.

And then he promised them that whosoe'er
Believed on him and truly kept his word,
Should also do the works that he had done;
And "greater works than these," the promise ran.
But they who walked with him from day to day
Had seen his mighty acts of love and power,
The works which they had thought beyond compare,
And so they marveled. Could there greater be?

But ah, not yet had they beheld the glory
Of the resurrection morn, when he came forth
In majesty and triumph from the tomb;
Nor yet had known that later day when clouds
Of earth were parted wide to let him out
Beyond the border of all mortal sight.
Not yet had these, the last and crowning acts
Of his divine adventure for the world,
Fully revealed to them the way unto the Father.

And still the promise stands, and still reveals
The pathway to the heavenly goal for all.
We too may rise o'er fear of change and death
To consciousness of ever-present life.
Continuing the infinite ascent,
We too may find the realm of fadeless day,
And our celestial being, safe and free,
And dwell, joint heir with Christ, for evermore.
Oh, vision infinite! Oh, wondrous works!
Well may we marvel. Could there greater be?

We'd love to hear from you!
