"Unspotted from the world"
"To keep himself unspotted from the world" (James 1:27) is the deep desire of the earnest Christian who longs to walk with God. But how can this desire be done? As we carry on our daily work, how may we keep ourselves pure, unspotted by wordly thinking and reasoning? Christian Scientists who begin the day by turning to their Father-Mother God in gratitude for blessings received, with thanksgiving that the dawning day belongs to God, good, and with the understanding that all men are brethren because they all have one origin, even God, Spirit, are obeying the admonition, "Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil."
When we let Christ, Truth, uproot superstition from our thoughts, correct false beliefs, and deny the false claims of material sense, we have prepared ourselves to withstand what we may hear or see of false mortal beliefs rising in opposition to God, perfect Mind. We have opened the door of our thinking to holy thoughts; to honesty, integrity, charity, kindness, patience, mercy, and other true spiritual qualities.
We who take up the study of Christian Science turn to the Bible and to "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" and the other writings of Mary Baker Eddy, Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, when we need comfort and guidance to solve the problems that appear as day follows day. We are warned to watch and pray lest we fall into the temptation of believing that there is a power opposed to God. We pray for an understanding heart, for humility and purity, that we may understand what we read, and obey and follow in the footsteps of our Master, Christ Jesus, who came to teach mortals to know man's true selfhood, and to turn away from idols to serve the only true God.
