Church

A most exalted definition of "Church" is that given by Mary Baker Eddy on page 583 of her textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures": "Church. The structure of Truth and Love; whatever rests upon and proceeds from divine Principle. The Church is that institution, which affords proof of its utility and is found elevating the race, rousing the dormant understanding from material beliefs to the apprehension of spiritual ideas and the demonstration of divine Science, thereby casting out devils, or error, and healing the sick."

All Christian Scientists are familiar with this inspired definition, an understanding of which is expected of all who apply for admission to membership in a Christian Science church.

One student felt himself thoroughly familiar with this passage, but when it was presented as a citation from the textbook in a Sunday Lesson-Sermon in the Christian Science Quarterly, further study in connection with the correlative passages from the Bible gave him much added light. This better understanding brought home to him as never before the obligations of the individual member.
