Will you kindly permit me to reply to your correspondent who, in a recent issue of your paper, objects to the term "divine Principle" used in Christian Science as a synonym for the word "God." It is true that Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, and author of its textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," uses the word "Principle," capitalized, when referring to Deity. On page 587 of that book we find this complete and satisfying definition of God: "God, The great I am; the all-knowing, all-seeing, all-acting, all-wise, all-loving, and eternal; Principle; Mind; Soul; Spirit; Life; Truth; Love; all substance; intelligence." Christ Jesus himself declared God to be Spirit in his conversation with the woman at the well in Samaria. The beloved Apostle John tells us, "God is love." These terms, when understood in the light of the teachings of Christian Science, serve to give a clearer comprehension of the true nature of God and man's relationship to Him as taught by Jesus and the apostles, and prophets of an older time. In the Song of Moses, as recorded in the book of Deuteronomy, we find these words: "He is the Rock, his work is perfect: for all his ways are judgment: a God of truth and without iniquity, just and right is he."

Your correspondent says that "what the people want is pure apostolic Christianity, not a philosophy of it." Christian Science, as its name clearly indicates, is the Science, or true knowledge, of the Christ. The Christian Science church was organized in 1879 to "reinstate primitive Christianity and its lost element of healing" (Manual of The Mother Church, p. 17). That it is fulfilling its mission is seen in the thousands of instances where lives have been regenerated, sorrows assuaged, and sicknesses healed. In the weekly, monthly, and quarterly periodicals published by The Christian Science Publishing Society, are many authentic testimonies from those who have found in Christian Science a real panacea for all their ills.
