Stirring the Soil

The new gardener was questioning one more experienced about the care of her little plot. Did she need only to keep it weeded and watered, now that the young plants were set out? she asked. "Water it, yes," replied the more experienced one; and she continued: "Most important of all, stir the soil! Loosen the earth daily, that the water may go deep down to the roots. Besides, daily stirring of the soil makes it impossible for weeds to gain ground."

The new gardener, a Christian Scientist, found in this advice much good food for thought. Our consciousness has often been likened to a mental garden, wherein we must be alert, lest weeds of error take root and choke the tender, new understanding of the Christ, Truth, which we have gained in Christian Science. But here was a method of prevention which, if faithfully used, would never allow a weed to grow large enough to require uprooting.

What is it within the ordinary thought that would require this stirring? Paul, writing to Timothy, tells him, "Stir up the gift of God, which is in thee." Our wise Leader, Mrs. Eddy, referring to the Christ Science, writes in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 162), "The effect of this Science is to stir the human mind to a change of base, on which it may yield to the harmony of the divine Mind."
