The Upward Way
The phrases "going forward," "making progress," "keeping to the right path," "going higher," and similar sayings, are often used by students of Christian Science. From the very commencement of their journey they recognize that the goal before them is perfection, and that if they hope to attain it, they must determine to follow in the way Christ Jesus pointed out. They must also obey the rules laid down by Mary Baker Eddy if they would demonstrate the omnipotence of good and the nothingness of evil. From the moment we take up the study of Christian Science, we have commenced our mental journey, our ascent above materiality.
How easy and joyful are our first footsteps! Maybe our thought is illumined through a healing which has come to us. Perhaps a so-called incurable disease has yielded to Truth, as it is revealed in the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy. How wonderful are the statements laid down therein! God is good. God is All-in-all. God is Love. He never created sin, sickness, or death. And because He is the only cause and creator, any seeming pain is unreal; it has no power, and does not belong to anyone. We need not be afraid of it. As children of God we can have only that which He gives, and it can only be good. What joy and freedom are realized as the bands are broken, the pain ceases, health is restored, and we determine to know more of this wonderful truth which reveals and proves the presence of God, infinite good!
This journey is a mental one, our thought rising higher and higher in the consciousness of Love. It consists in putting off the old for the new man, in accepting the spiritual truth of being and applying it in every situation. It means willingness to see real being as God and His ideas, and to relinquish reliance upon matter for life and health, happiness and supply. This journey means the acceptance always of the truth about God and man.
