Signs of the Times

Topic: Facing the Future with Courage

[Rev. James Reid, D. D., in the British Weekly, London, England]

It was not a happy prospect that faced the disciples as they went towards Jerusalem. A crisis lay ahead. A storm was brewing on the horizon. They went on, following Christ, step by step. There was nothing else to be done. But as they followed they were afraid.

As we look ahead today the prospect is not bright. Forty years ago the future seemed settled to those who were facing life. Today it is uncertain. There is a cartoon in one of our museums with the title, "The Twentieth Century Looks at the Future." It shows a young man, well-dressed, looking across a wide space towards the horizon. But over the horizon hangs a large question mark. That is a picture of the future as many see it. Great forces are struggling together all over the world. What will come out of this cauldron ... no one knows.
