Sowing and Reaping

[Written Especially for Young People]

A False belief which has had a very harmful effect upon mankind is that one may become the helpless victim of adverse circumstances in spite of one's earnest efforts to succeed in life.

Fortunate indeed are those young people who have the privilege of learning the truth regarding this question through Christian Science. Even though they may be confronted by the evil suggestion of lack of place and opportunity, when the time comes for them to take their place in the world, they need never be deceived into accepting it as true. Alert young students can quickly silence it by their clear understanding and application of Paul's statement, "Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap."

The confidence this text inspires is based on the fact of God's unchanging law of cause and effect. Our beloved Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, stresses this point on page 276 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," where she writes: "Nature and revelation inform us that like produces like. Divine Science does not gather grapes from thorns nor figs from thistles." Conversely, we know that we shall not gather thorns if we have planted grapes, nor thistles if we have planted figs.
