The Little Things

Speak understandingly to other hearts
In language sweet with comfort and with peace,
And bring to tired eyes a happy light,
And to the burdened breast a quick release.

Speak gently in a hurried, clamorous world,
In words of patience for the pressing throngs;
Walk quietly in noisy marts of men,
And heal the jagged cut of mortal wrongs.

Speak lovingly in answer to earth's hate,
For simple words of love have precious powers
To heal all hate, to still sin's strident shock,
And make of time a strand of song-sweet hours.

These are the little things that all can do
To beautify each day with happiness;
The little things too often overlooked—
The little things that cheer and heal and bless.
