Signs of the Times

Topic: The Church and Society

[From the Cameron Enterprise, Texas]

There are many people who are not interested in the churches of our land. As far as they are concerned, there would not need to be any churches; so they think, and they try to make themselves believe that. Perhaps they are just trying to find an excuse to ease their conscience for not attending and for not supporting the church. But would these same people want to live in a land in which there is no church, where the influence of the church has not bettered life and living conditions? Would they really like to live among heathen, barbarian surroundings, where civilization is unknown? Only where God's Word, and the church which teaches it, is unknown, in heathen countries and among heathen peoples, are the blessings of Christianity and civilization unknown. Look at the life and living conditions of the heathen, if you would know what the lack of the church's influence means to life. It is true that also in so-called Christian, civilized countries like America there are still many things that are not right and good, but bad and evil; but that is because in our country and other so-called Christian lands, still too many people do not appreciate the church's work, and will not hearken to the teachings of God's Word; too many are not associated with the church wholeheartedly and do not really live according to the Word of God. But the truth of [Jesus] Christ's words, "Blessed are they that hear the word of God, and keep it" ... is as apparent today as when he spoke those words; and the pages of history, past and present, testify to it. Think it over!
