In the year 1914 I was in a sanatorium in Switzerland, suffering from what the doctors termed spondylitis or tuberculosis of the spine. Although I had the best medical care, including the sun cure, the disease was not checked, and after I had passed many months lying on my back, the doctors considered putting weights on my legs to prevent the breaking of the affected vertebra, which X-ray pictures showed to be partially destroyed.

At this stage I began reading Science and Health, the Christian Science textbook, by Mary Baker Eddy. Although I did not fully realize the change that was taking place in my consciousness, after a few weeks of reading this wonderful book I had a marvelous experience one evening. I felt a rush as of a spiritual springtime sweeping through my thought and my pain-racked body, bearing away all suffering and fear, and in an instant, giving me joy, confidence, and happiness. I knew that I was well, and that God had healed me! And I understood the concluding statement of many of the narratives of Jesus' healings in the New Testament, when it is recorded that they "glorified God." I, too, glorified God.

In the morning I told the nurse that God had healed me, and that I wanted to get up. She believed that God had healed me, but she could not permit me to arise. On the second day after this wonderful experience, the message that war had been declared flashed across our peaceful countryside, and in the ensuing confusion I was permitted to get up and go home.
