[Christian Science Organization at Oxford University, England]

Christian Science meetings were first held by Oxford...

Christian Science meetings were first held by Oxford undergraduates in 1920 in a private house, under the auspices of a kind and interested member of the branch church in the town. Meetings continued to be held informally for some years, and in 1927 the students applied for recognition by The Mother Church, and became a formal organization.

Although at present the numbers are not large, there is an active and enthusiastic membership, and there have recently been signs of increasing interest among the undergraduates at large. Meetings are held on alternate Thursdays during term; the Reader is elected annually, and must be a member of The Mother Church, as also must all other officers, in agreement with Article XXIII, Section 8, of the Manual of The Mother Church and the constitution of the organization. The organization has an Executive Committee of resident undergraduates.

For some years an annual lecture has been given, and recently the Lecture Committee has found it possible to obtain a university building for the purpose. The lecture is usually given in the middle term of the academic year. This annual lecture is made possible by the generosity of the Trustees under the Will of Mary Baker Eddy, whereby the lecturer's fee is covered, although it is hoped eventually to build up a lecture fund out of which all expenses may be drawn. Members greatly value the opportunity of disseminating the knowledge of Christian Science to a wider public in the university, as they feel that this is an important function of the organization.
