Item of Interest
From time to time there have appeared books written by and published for individuals, some of whom are members of The Mother Church, in the belief that the notes made during their study and practice of the teachings of Christian Science will be of particular benefit to others. Although these books may not be intended by the writers as textbooks of Christian Science, yet in some cases they are mistakenly used as such by some readers, who hope to find something not found in the authorized Christian Science literature, or a short method for gaining an understanding of God.
Unselfish though the motive may be which prompts such writers to share results of their experience, the authros of such books, if able to express Christian Science correctly and not disposed to exploit merely personal views, could render a better and larger service by contributing to our periodicals. Furthermore, when such books attempt to explain Christian Science, they lack the through statement of Christian Science as it is found in the writings of our Leader, Mary Baker Eddy. A distinct phase of mortal mind is the temptation to prefer what is irregular or unauthorized to what is provided in the authorized and regular ways. If additional literature on the subject of Christian Science were needed, this need would be recognized and would naturally be supplied by The Christian Science Board of Directors, through The Christian Science Publishing Society, the channel which our Leader has provided.
Mrs. Eddy has stated Christian Science in the clearest and simplest manner. Alert students realize that their growth in the understanding of its teachings is abundant and continuous when they confine their study and reading to the Bible, to our Leader's writings, and to that authorized literature which has had the approval of those appointed and qualified to pronounce upon its correctness and accuracy of statement. Such students therefore do not jeopardize their own progress by investigating writings about Christian Science. (See Church Manual, Article IV, Section 1; Article XXI, Section 3.) The more Christian Scientists learn to look to the publishers of Mrs. Eddy's works—the Trustees under her will—and to The Christian Science Publishing Society, to supply them with literature on the subject of Christian Science, the more they will safeguard the pure and unadulterated truth Mrs. Eddy revealed to the world.
