Sunday School Notes and Comments

Being Taught of God

When church members are appointed to teach in the Sunday school, it is not an unusual thing for some to decline the appointment because they feel that it is an experience for which they are not sufficiently qualified. This truly is an honest and humble position to take; but in many instances it is only half of the answer, for without careful preparation each week, and very definite metaphysical work claiming the ever-presence and power of God, Mind, no one could expect to succeed as a teacher of the young people. Jesus said, "I can of mine own self do nothing;" and Paul said, "I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me." It has been proved many, many times that as one's entire reliance is placed on God, He is found to be the ever-present Mind which is constantly imparting the ideas needed.

The following experience is one which shows how God is ever present to meet each and every situation. In a Sunday school class of young high school students, there had always been a most friendly feeling between the boys, until one winter during basketball season there commenced to be what at first seemed a little friendly rivalry among those who attended several different high schools in the city. This went on for several weeks in a harmless way, apparently, until one Sunday, as the boys assembled and exchanged greetings, it was noticed that two of them seemed to be intensely disliking each other, and that the other boys were commencing to take sides.

As the time came for studying the Lesson-Sermon in the Christian Science Quarterly, the teacher knew that God, the ever-present Mind, would bring forth what was needed to produce harmony and peace in the class. Through this metaphysical work it became possible for the first time that day to gain the attention of the boys. Then they were told that these games had a legitimate place in their human experience, but only if they were going to help them to be finer men.
