Christian Advocate

I observe that one of the tenets of the Church of Christ is "unity of all who love our Lord, on the basis of the New Testament." It was therefore with feelings of very great regret that I read the recent article in the Christian Advocate, for the writer displayed most unfriendly feelings toward a Christian denomination which interprets the gospel along lines other than his own.

The writer of the article has embodied so many misconceptions, misstatements, and incorrect quotations that it would need an article of considerable length to correct each item, but I should be glad if you would allow me sufficient space to deal with a few of the points raised. Your correspondent states, "Its origin is, to put it mildly, dubious." Mrs. Eddy herself wrote (Science and Health, p. 126): "I have found nothing in ancient or in modern systems on which to found my own, except the teachings and demonstrations of our great Master and the lives of prophets and apostles. The Bible has been my only authority. I have had no other guide in 'the straight and narrow way' of Truth."

Your contributor also asserts that Christian Science "is unreasonable, unchristian, and blasphemous, and against the Scriptures." This is a most uncharitable assertion, as even a superficial reading of the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, would reveal.
