"For of him, and through him, and to him, are all things" (Rom. 11:36)—In the Greek of the New Testament, as in the familiar rendering of the Authorized Version, this statement is set down in a somewhat condensed form, and modern translators make a practice of expanding it, in an effort to clarify the sense. Thus Goodspeed suggests: "For from him everything comes; through him everything exists; and in him everything ends!" Weymouth (5th edition) has: "For all proceeds from Him, and exists by Him and for Him;" and Moffatt: "All comes from him, all lives by him, all ends in him."

"The eyes of all wait upon thee" (Ps. 145:15)—The Hebrew verb "sabar," used in this verse, is identical in form with antoher verb, which means "to examine or inspect," and suggests the more natural translation: "The eyes of all look unto thee." Compare Moffatt's rendering: "All thy creatures look to thee." It may be noted, however, that Smith prefers to retain the rendering of the Authorized Version.

"I will fetch my knowledge from afar, and will aseribe righteousness to my Maker" (Job 36:3)—The Hebrew word "tsedek," which is here rendered "righteousness," can also mean "justice" (cf. Brown, Driver, Briggs: Hebrew Lexicon, p. 841). Moffatt offers the interesting rendering: "I will now justify my Creator from a wide survey of the truth."
