No one could have ridiculed more than I what he thought Christian Science to be. And yet, following years in which I remember but rare periods when I was not under either medical or surgical care for colds, indigestion, nervous breakdowns, great depression, appendicitis, and extreme fatigue, there came a period in 1926 when the words "Christian Science" were constantly before my eyes.
Fear that a visit to a practitioner would result in some sweet and soothing platitudes being voiced hindered my going: but not for long, for I was led to one who, in one interview, clearly and convincingly started me on the right path, and capped all with proof two days later by destroying for me within twenty-four hours the claims of virulent influenza. Since then all sorts of discomforts have dropped away. So-called hereditary gout, which kept me on a rigid diet and in bed with attacks of inflammation for three or four months each year, disappeared after one treatment from a practitioner. Constant colds, bilious attacks, and sore throats have gone, almost unnoticed, and a violent temper, believed also to be hereditary, is a thing of the past.
The smoking and drinking habits went the way of all other false beliefs; the latter through a real desire, during a period of great stress and responsibility, not to make any exaggerated statements, thus proving Mrs. Eddy's words in Science and Health (p. 192), "Whatever holds human thought in line with unselfed love, receives directly the divine power."
