It is to be regretted that the religious article from The Christian Science Monitor published in your newspaper incurred hostile criticism of Christian Science by a correspondent in your issue of November 6.

Founded by Mary Baker Eddy, as we read in "The First Church of Christ, Scientist, and Miscellany" (p. 353), "to injure no man, but to bless all mankind," The Christian Science Monitor enjoys throughout the world a reputation for honest, clean, constructive journalism.

Your correspondent's charge of blasphemy can be attributed only to his misunderstanding of the spiritual import of our Master's teachings. Jesus taught and practiced scientific Christian healing. He did this through spiritual means, that is, through right understanding of the perfect, eternal nature of God, man, and the universe. This truth, spiritually understood, demonstrated perfect healings; and so the Master said, "Ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free."

The word "science" strictly means "certain knowledge," and Christian Science teaches that only that which is eternal and perfect is absolutely true and real. Thus Christian Science is seen to relate only to the correct knowledge of God and His eternal manifestations. The divine Comforter, Christian Science, which is to "teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance," brings to the receptive thought the demonstrable understanding of God, good.

Christian Science takes issue with popular theology because its teachings demonstrate Christian healing. For over sixty years many hundreds have testified in churches and in written and authenticated testimonies to the healings of sin, disease, and sorrow in Christian Science; problems of lack have been adjusted through the right knowing of the affluence of good and of God's care for all alike; harmony has been restored in unhappy homes.

It will be remembered that the message of our Master was received only by those who were receptive to its spiritual significance. The materially-minded, the self-righteous, the learned, grounded in their theories of what the Saviour should be, found his teachings so obnoxious that they persecuted the great Teacher, and finally crucified him. Those who have failed to observe his imperative commands to "heal the sick" have failed to give proof of their understanding of his teachings, and are not in a position to criticize Christian Science, which has restored to mankind the priceless privilege of spiritual healing.

On page 361 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" Mrs. Eddy says, "A germ of infinite Truth, though least in the kingdom of heaven, is the higher hope on earth, but it will be rejected and reviled until God prepares the soil for the seed."
