At the end of 1917, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures"...
At the end of 1917, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy was lent to a very dear friend with whom I was living. For many months she had been suffering from a severe form of stomach trouble and had been unable to take normal food. My friend read the book for some hours that night, and to my great joy the following morning she was healed and able to eat an ordinary meal and enjoy it.
At this time I was preparing to go into a hospital to undergo an operation for an internal condition which had troubled me from childhood, but after witnessing this healing I decided to take up the study of Christian Science. I wrote thanking my doctor for his kindness to me and canceled all arrangements with the hospital.
After some months of patient and loving help from a practitioner this displaced condition was healed, and also many faults of character were replaced by more loving thoughts. During the summer of 1919, whilst I was employed on my own account, things became very difficult and my supply was inadequate to meet my needs. Whilst I was studying the Lesson-Sermon in the Christian Science Quarterly one morning, the following words came in the reading: "Soul has infinite resources with which to bless mankind" (Science and Health, p. 60). This passage seemed to stand out with such clearness that I became conscious only of God's abundant goodness. Two days later a friend called and offered me some work. Having had no experience in that particular line of business, I was not at all happy in accepting, but realizing it was an answer to my prayer I resolved to go forward, knowing that God was with me. I was very happy in this work, and in time this step led me to a much better position.
