One of the greatest blessings that has come to me since I first took up the study of Christian Science is the truer understanding of gratitude, due to the conscious admission that God, good, is omnipresent here and now!
From early childhood I had been raised with a rather free thought in regard to religion. My parents never laid any particular stress on the need of having me taught the Scriptures. Consequently, I never knew anything of its message except such stories as I gathered from those with whom I had intercourse in the world. Most of these, I have learned since taking up the study of Christian Science, were sadly distorted by the vagaries of mortal mind.
Ours was always a normally happy home, yet we were never without some illness to disturb its harmony. The family medicine chest was usually stocked to capacity. As far back as I can remember, I was suffering from one ailment after another—measles, scarlet fever, appendicitis, yellow jaundice, and stomach catarrh. The consequence was that I was continually being doctored and dosed with medicine and treatments of all sorts. One specialist of high repute in the medical profession recommended that I be sent to live on a farm, and even this was done, but to no avail. According to the doctors' belief I was destined to remain a weak, sickly individual the rest of my natural days.
