About thirty years ago I began the study of Christian Science
About thirty years ago I began the study of Christian Science. At that time I was particularly interested in testimonies given by those with years of experience, for I thought they had proved the efficacy of Christian Science under many difficult conditions. However, I learned that we do not need to wait for time to pass before we can avail ourselves of God's saving power.
About six months after I became a student of Christian Science I had occasion to take passage on a boat at San Francisco for Portland, Oregon. Before taking this boat I was greatly disturbed by a sense of fear and apprehension of danger. I declared the truth of God's presence and power, and began the journey. At midnight, in a fog, our boat was in collision with another boat and sank in a few minutes. After a time I was taken from the water and placed on the other boat, which was in a sinking condition. In about four hours we were rescued and taken to Eureka, California. During this time I had no sense of fear. I knew that God was my Life, and that His presence was there to save. Afterwards, when we landed, much kindness was expressed in providing for our needs. For this I have always been grateful.
A few days later, I awakened one morning with a great sense of pain as a result of exposure. I did not know that I should have protected myself from this. There was no one to whom I could turn for help, but I knew that I could turn to God. With the greatest sense of gratitude for God's loving care I turned to Him and was lifted above this condition through the realization that Life is spiritual, not material. I was healed instantaneously and arose and went to a distant part of the city. Mrs. Eddy says in Science and Health (p. 14): "Become conscious for a single moment that Life and intelligence are purely spiritual,—neither in nor of matter,—and the body will then utter no complaints. If suffering from a belief in sickness, you will find yourself suddenly well."
