Apprehension

Because all that can be apprehended truly, that is, spiritually, is God and His perfect manifestation, the term apprehension, rightly interpreted, unfolds the remedy for fear, sin, and woe. A dictionary defines "to apprehend" as "to lay hold of or to grasp mentally; to grasp a truth."

Spiritual apprehension, pure perception, is indispensable to spiritual growth and the overcoming of evil, for as Mrs. Eddy writes in "Unity of Good" (p. 40), "A sense material apprehends nothing strictly belonging to the nature and office of Life." The discord endured by humanity is the result of its misapprehension of the status of God and man. Material sense evidence should not be taken tragically, for it is inactual and revocable. Included in the "office of Life" we certainly find health, strength, and joyfulness, for what would Life be without them?

Should one seem to be confronted with lack of health or supply, dearth of wisdom, intelligence, happiness, this negative state can be successfully dealt with through increasing one's apprehension of divine Principle. This can be accomplished by studying in our Leader's works statements relating to spiritual apprehension. From this study, carried on with the help of the Concordances, the student of Christian Science will emerge refreshed and reassured.
