About nine years ago I came to a point where my health had entirely given way, and a specialist said he could do nothing for me. Some Christian Science friends asked me to stay with them, and I began daily to read the Lesson-Sermon from the Bible and Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, though I was not understanding much of what I read. With the help of these dear friends I began to see the great need for right thinking to bring one into line with God's will for man and therefore into expressing harmony in all the activities of life here, including health. At the end of about two months I was able to return to a position of responsibility, which I had thought it would never be possible to undertake again. From that time onwards every difficulty which has arisen has been met with the help of Christian Science, sometimes by using what understanding has come to me through my own study, and when this has not seemed to be sufficient to meet the need I have received the help of practitioners, for which I can never be sufficiently grateful.

It would be impossible to enumerate all the blessings which have come to me since Christian Science came into my life; and I do attest most earnestly and gratefully that Science does heal, as my own healings of acute lumbago in about nine hours, of pneumonia without my spending any time in bed and while I was continuing with my work, and of many other illnesses, have given abundant proof.

I found it very difficult, after years of active membership in an orthodox church, to believe that by just reading a book one could be healed of any and all of the discordant conditions which seemed so real and so much a necessary part of life. But with the reading came a changed outlook and the gradual understanding, even though in a very small degree, of God as Life and man as His image and likeness, as we read in Genesis 1:27. Mrs. Eddy says (Science and Health, p. 449), "A grain of Christian Science does wonders for mortals," and it is by using just the grain we know that wonders are indeed worked.
