With a heart overflowing with gratitude to God for the many blessings I have received through the study of Christian Science I wish to add my sincere testimony.
I wish to tell of a healing which is paramount in my mind, and which was the means of bringing me into Christian Science. Thirty years ago my sister sent me Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, to read to my mother, who was an invalid. I read the book to her, but she seemed to receive no help from it, and as I had no faith or even interest in it, the book was laid away for several years. Later I moved to a city where I had the opportunity of attending Christian Science services. I attended lectures and Wednesday evening testimony meetings and heard of many wonderful healings, which sounded all right, but, like Thomas, I felt that if I could see a healing I might believe. Well, I saw one.
This same sister was playing the part of Santa Claus at a Christmas tree in my home, wearing a suit trimmed in cotton. When the candles were lighted it was noticed that the tree was igniting in several places. As my sister reached up to snuff one of the candles out with her fingertips, the cotton on her sleeve came in contact with the flame and instantly she was enveloped in flames. Something like a panic followed as she ran through the house, burning cotton falling from her. It seemed inevitable that the house would burn. However, when she reached the kitchen my brother and another man succeeded in extinguishing the flames, but not before she was badly burned about the neck, face, and arms. She kept repeating that she was all right and for us to call a Christian Science practitioner. We did so, and in twenty minutes she was able to join the party and sat in a warm room the balance of the evening. She slept well that night and could have gone back to her place as saleswoman the next morning were it not for her unsightly appearance, for it was necessary for her to wear bandages. In two weeks she returned to work with not the slightest scar.
