Claiming Our Heritage

The woman who said that she was "not good enough to try Christian Science" would not have made that remark if she had gained a correct understanding of the nature of Christian Science. To remark that one is "not good enough to try mathematics" would be no more incongruous. Mathematics can be applied exactly in proportion to one's understanding of its rules. And the same is true of Christian Science.

Sinful indulgence hinders scientific demonstration, but Christian Science is used in the overcoming of sin, which proves that no particular degree of goodness is requisite before one can receive its benefits. One studies mathematics that he may solve mathematical problems. He studies Christian Science that he may solve the problem of being.

Many people, resting in the fitful sunshine of material prosperity and a physical sense of vigor, feel that they do not need Christian Science. But there may come a time when, in the words of a hymn, "all material streams are dried," and apparently there is no help at hand in the hour of human need. At such a time, often spoken of as "God's opportunity," Christian Science will be found to offer healing and peace, that peace which "passeth all understanding." And this incontrovertibly proves its divine origin.
