The Joyous Way
When Christ Jesus gave this instruction, "Enter ye in at the strait gate: ... because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life," he could not have intended to place any limitation on right activity or joy. The Master, throughout his ministry, demonstrated in a practical way God's plan for man as His reflection, wholly spiritual, and free from bondage of every sort, and he proclaimed his divine mission among men with this statement: "I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly."
One striving sincerely, yet unsuccessfully, to bring this promised harmony into his everyday experiences may wonder why he seems to continue in the broad way of want and woe. To many such individuals Christian Science is revealing, through spiritual understanding, how obedience in following the Way-shower's footsteps affords endless opportunity for joy and freedom in all their daily activities.
Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, writes (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, p. 151): "All that really exists is the divine Mind and its idea, and in this Mind the entire being is found harmonious and eternal. The straight and narrow way is to see and acknowledge this fact, yield to this power, and follow the leadings of truth." How clearly this shows the great love in which the heavenly Father has encompassed His image, man, and how simple are the directions for bringing into individual consciousness His bountiful blessings! Only recognition of the eternal fact that God does govern, and willingness to be led aright, are asked. No sacrifice of any right thing is required. Omnipotent and omnipresent Mind having created all, and only that which is good, there is in reality only one pathway, that of Truth, Life, and Love. Therefore, the physical senses' claim of an opposite way of inharmony is illusory. The scientific, spiritual acknowledgment of perfect God and perfect man excludes all belief in imperfection. Thus, as the narrow way is discerned, our spiritual understanding of this fact increases, and false appetites and sinful beliefs, lacking entity, are outgrown and disappear from our thought and experience.
