Christian Science has given much to me; and I wish to...
Christian Science has given much to me; and I wish to express my gratitude through this testimony, with the hope that it may prove helpful to others.
Before knowing anything of Christian Science I doubted nearly all things. One of our first experiences after we began the study of Christian Science was the healing of my distrust. Our child was suffering intense pain from mastoiditis. It was night, and we were very young in Science. We discussed the advisability of calling either a doctor or a practitioner, and it was decided to rely upon Christian Science treatment. Repeated attempts to reach the practitioner were unavailing, and as the child's increasing pain, accompanied by constant shrieking, increased our fear, I turned to Science and Health by Mary Baker Eddy. As I picked up the book I read on its cover the words, "Heal the sick, Raise the dead, Cleanse the lepers, Cast out demons." I reasoned that what is written in this textbook or on it must be true, because if it were not, the religion could not have survived. I then knew that it must "heal the sick." As my fear was replaced by this new confidence I realized that the child had ceased crying. He was asleep, the healing was complete, and there has not been a recurrence of that manifestation.
One day an automobile traveling thirty-five miles an hour struck me and I was hurled to the street some twelve feet away. I immediately arose without help, repeating "the scientific statement of being" (Science and Health, p. 468). Sympathetic witnesses offered me every assistance, including medical treatment, ambulance service, and testimony against the driver for negligence. I declined each proffer lovingly and requested that I be left to myself. I did my work as we are taught in Christian Science, and in less than five minutes I was completely free from a dazed condition. I assured the very frightened driver of the car that I was not injured, and walked away from the scene without any adverse results from the occurrence.
