Be Still

Amidst the earthquake and the fire,
     The storms of temper and self-will,
The gusts of passion and desire,
     Teach me to listen and be still,

To stand as once Elijah stood,
     And listen as he did that day,
To hear the still, small voice of good
     Until the clamor dies away;

With calm to stand when tempests lower,
     To hear His "Peace, be still," to fear;
To know that evil has no power,
     That nought but Love is here and near;

Be still when sickness would assail,
     When sin would tempt, or death appall,
Know error's seeming might will fail,
     And God alone be seen as All.

Thus may I lift my thought to Love,
     Thus tread the path that Jesus trod,
Obedient to the voice above:
     "Be still, and know that I am God."
