In "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by...

In "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy (p. 574) we read, "The very circumstance, which your suffering sense deems wrathful and afflictive, Love can make an angel entertained unawares." I learned the truth of this statement through a severe injury to my ankle, and though no X-ray or medical diagnosis was made, the evidence was sufficient to indicate the seriousness of the condition. Following upon this I spent a holiday walking many miles without discomfort, but nothing would induce me to run! At this point I was invited to play tennis with a party of young people, and I knew then that the time had come to "go up higher." I was among strangers, although they were Christian Scientists, and they knew nothing of my fears; but through turning to God for help I was able to play an energetic game and take my full share of the play. After this I felt the healing was complete.

In my work as a teacher of dancing I had proved to a very large extent the possibility of teaching this art to a much higher degree than I was able to put into practice in my own experience. Mrs. Eddy writes (ibid., p. 26), "A musician demonstrates the beauty of the music he teaches in order to show the learner the way by practice as well as precept," and it was presented to me now to be willing at least to begin to demonstrate in practice what I had taught by precept for so many years. Following up this thought, I was led to discuss the matter with one of the best living authorities in this profession, and he offered to give me lessons. This further step demanded a strenuous use of the limbs with a very exacting technique, including jumping, and this at an age no longer considered young! "Mind, joyous in strength, dwells in the realm of Mind. Mind's infinite ideas run and disport themselves. In humility they climb the heights of holiness" (ibid., p. 514). To have proved, through the loving help of Christian Science practitioners, the possibility of breaking down this human sense of limitation is cause for very real gratitude.
